The Old Back Porch
I’m sitting on the old back porch
It’s wood roof shelters me
A painted Adirondack chair
And bench to rest my feet
This Cabin’s peeled log handrails
Fitted firmly to their posts
I sip my morning coffee
To this day I’ll drink a toast
For where on earth could I be now
With better views than this
My cabin porch above the creek
When I go I will miss
As seasons change this picture
Framed so nicely in my view
I’ll treasure mornings on this porch
Enjoying all that’s new
Some mornings squirrels and birds eat berries
From the vines below
Long bridal trail beneath bent oaks
Lay next to where they grow
The crisp cold air of autumn
Turns my breath into a fog
I clasp my coffee in both hands
Before its warmth is gone
Each time I’ve rested in its arms
This old porch where I’m drawn
I feel that I’ve seen heaven
On this earth before I’m gone
